World Music & Dance Centre, Rotterdam

In Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the World Music & Dance Centre has taken shape. The original plan was adapted to an urban setting. Moving away from the original idea of a rural campus, the World Music and Dance Centre serves as a central location and place of reference for world music and dance activities in the city, and an outreach centre for community music activities.

The World Music and Dance Centre combines the efforts of organisations already active in this field: conservatorium and dance academy, municipal arts centre, festival, podium, community arts centre, centre for research and development, and information point for national and international queries.

Funding from the European Commission (D2) has provided the conditions for building the physical World Music and Dance Centre. Two existing buildings - conservatorium and music school - were joined together and enhanced with a concert area (to seat up to 200) and other facilities to optimalise learning and enjoying world music and dance.

The World Music & Dance Centre (WMDC) was officially opened in December 2006 by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. For more information about the WMDC, check out the website at www.wmdc.nl or contact the office at +31 10 2444516.
